The tour of the Derwent Valley starts at historic New Norfolk and follows the river Derwent along a scenic route to Plenty and the historic Salmon Ponds (circa 1861).
Here you can relax in the magnificent historic gardens, visit the birthplace of trout in Australia and learn about how trout were brought to Australia from England. Visit the Museum of Trout Fishing and feed the huge trout and salmon basking in the large ponds.
Just past the Salmon Ponds is Kinvarra Estate, where you might like to indulge in a tutored tasting of fine wine (By appointment only).
Further on is Bushy Park, a village of quaint cottages, oast houses and hop fields. Here we visit the famous hop drying kiln named “Text Kiln” (constructed by E. Shoobridge, JP in 1867) and discover the origin of its unusual name.
You might like to relax on the bank of the Styx River for morning tea and pick luscious blackberries when in season.
Further on through the picturesque valley is Something Wild Wildlife Sanctuary. Here you have the opportunity to view native wildlife and orphaned animals that are being rehabilitated for release back into the wild.
Mt Field National Park is a short distance along the road. An experience not to be missed is the 25-minute walk to the famous Russell Falls. This is an easy walk that takes you along a sealed track under the canopy of majestic giant eucalypts, stunning ferns and beautiful myrtles.
Leaving Mt Field we then take the Dunrobin Bridge across Meadowbank Lake. Travelling on through sheep grazing country we arrive at the colonial village of Hamilton. Here you might like to wander amongst the charming cottages, browse through the craft shops and visit the stunning gardens of Prospect Villa.
From Hamilton the highway takes us back to New Norfolk through the village of Gretna home to Tasmania’s own Gretna Green hotel. Here you might like to stop for refreshments and a chat to the locals before arriving back at your accommodation
We can provide an optional 60's picnic lunch with a bottle of Derwent Valley wine or you might like to dine at one of the local eateries along the way -
the choice is yours.
